;Limited by the Japan’s colonial policies, being a student of medical school and teacher’s school were the “only” way to receive the higher education. In this way, teachers and doctors were considered to be the social elites in Japanese colonial period. Teachers with the status of an official, especially had huge influences, over local education and culture. In such situation, teachers were proud of their career and devoted themselves to education. Those images of teachers in Japanese colonial period leave the expectations and positive images of to the later society.
Current studies seem to merely focus on the analyzing of education stages and researching of the system of public schools. The studies of the salary of teachers are waiting to be researched. With the exploration of basic historical archives, this study concludes the conventions of salary distribution after collecting the salary regulations. Combining the biographical literature during the Japan’s colonial period, this study indicates the general situation of salary of that time. This part also makes a comparation among salaries among different occupations. The study tries to make a comment over the rationality of this. Based on the comment, the study explains why teachers in Japan’s colonial period usually had a very short term of appointment which is a common existing social situation. At the last part, the study concludes how the Governor-General of Taiwan made adjustments over the salary of teachers in public schools.
