There is a set of equivalence conditions for the orthonormality of the compactly supported scaling functions. Among them, there is the Cohen's tau-cycle condition. In order to answer the question whether it is enough to check this condition by a finite number of points, we study the tau-cycles in more detail. (C) 1998 Academic Press.
